"Former Governors' Offspring Appointed as Committee Chairs in the House of Representatives"
In a recent plenary session on Thursday, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas made a noteworthy announcement regarding the constitution of 134 standing committees in the House of Representatives. These committees play a crucial role in carrying out oversight functions on government agencies and programs, as well as addressing matters of national importance, all in accordance with the provisions of the constitution and the house standing rules.
What makes this development particularly interesting is that five of the appointed chairmen happen to be children of former governors, adding a unique dimension to the composition of the committees. Let's take a closer look at these individuals and their respective committees:
Ibori Suenu, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Delta, has been appointed to chair the Niger Delta Development Commission (NNDC) committee. His father, James Ibori, served as the governor of Delta State from 1999 to 2007.
Mohammed Bello el-Rufai, a lawmaker from Kaduna and a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been assigned the Banking Regulation committee. He is the son of Nasir el-Rufai, the immediate past governor of Kaduna.
Adegboyega Adefarati, representing the APC from Ondo, has been designated as the chairman of the Labor, Employment, and Productivity committee. His late father, Adebayo Adefarati, served as the governor of Ondo from 1999 to 2003.
Olamiju Akala, also known as the son of the late Alao Akala, a former governor of Oyo, will head the Youth in Parliament committee.
Lastly, Olumide Osoba has been appointed as the chairman of the Justice committee. He is the son of Segun Osoba, former governor of Ogun State, who held the position between 1992 and 2003.
These appointments were made in accordance with the relevant rules and regulations governing such assignments, and it reflects the diversity of experience and backgrounds among the committee chairmen. The children of former governors now have an opportunity to contribute their expertise and perspective to the important work of the House of Representatives standing committees.
