Politicians Misinterpret My Visits to Tinubu, Says Jonathan

In a meticulously crafted statement released through his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze, Former President Goodluck Jonathan sought to clarify the nature of his recent visits to President Bola Tinubu, which had sparked misconceptions among certain politicians. The visits, he explained, were driven by a sincere intent to brief President Tinubu, who had just been elected as the Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, on crucial developments within the sub-region.

Drawing attention to the importance of setting the record straight, Jonathan urged Nigerians not to fall prey to the misleading narratives spun by what he referred to as "mischief makers" and the proliferation of fabricated news. He stressed the potential danger these false claims posed to the country's harmony and progress.

Specifically, the former President refuted a spurious allegation in the media that he was attempting to nominate a minister from Bayelsa State to serve in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's government. He dismissed the falsehood and questioned the credibility of the individuals behind the claim, highlighting that they lacked any substantial evidence or details to support their narrative.

As the Chairman of the ECOWAS Council of the Wise and a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, Jonathan firmly stated that the publication's assertions were not only false but also malicious and unnecessary. He expressed disappointment in the individuals who seemed eager to spread unfounded rumors without providing any clarity on the alleged consultations or identifying the supposed beneficiary of the envisaged nomination.

The former President speculated that certain low-profile politicians might have mistakenly interpreted his recent visit to the Presidential Villa in Abuja, leading to the baseless accusations. However, he asserted that well-informed politicians, both within and outside Bayelsa State, were well aware of his selfless and exemplary commitment to politics and statesmanship, rendering the claims of the so-called Bayelsa APC Elders Council as mere cheap blackmail.

Drawing a parallel with past attempts to tarnish his reputation while he was in office, Jonathan lamented the reoccurrence of such futile tactics. He emphasized that his image had continued to soar both on the national and international stage, despite the constant attempts to sully it.

Putting an end to any lingering doubts, the former President categorically denied any involvement in influencing the nomination of a ministerial slot from Bayelsa State in President Tinubu's government. He sought to dispel the concerns raised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders Council in Bayelsa State and reasserted his commitment to upholding the principles of truth and transparency in all his actions.

In conclusion, Jonathan implored Nigerians to be discerning and vigilant against the proliferation of fake news and deceptive narratives that could undermine the nation's harmony and growth. With this statement, he hoped to set the record straight, dispel unfounded rumors, and reaffirm his unwavering dedication to the betterment of Nigeria and the broader West African region.
