Subsidy Removal: Soludo's Position and Possible Diversion of Palliatives by Governors - Shehu Sani's Concerns
Shehu Sani, a well-known socio-political commentator, expressed his support for Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State regarding the distribution of palliative aid. Sani pointed out that in some cases, state governors might divert the funds meant for palliative purposes to other uses, such as paying contractors, clearing salary backlogs, settling domestic debts, or supporting political allies.
Tweeting, Sani wrote: “Without proper check, some states will use palliative funds to pay contractors they are owing or pay the inherited backlog of salaries and pensions or use it to settle their domestic debts with Banks or use it settle political supporters; Soludo is right, all states are not equal.”
Governor Soludo had earlier appealed to fellow governors to exercise fiscal restraint and prudence in utilizing funds, particularly in light of the hardships faced by Nigerians due to the removal of fuel subsidies. He reminded them not to be insensitive to the struggles and challenges faced by their constituents and cautioned against maintaining extravagant lifestyles, such as long convoys, while the people they govern are enduring hardship. Soludo urged a more compassionate and responsible approach in managing state resources to address the pressing needs of the populace.
