Tinubu's Ministerial List Includes Four Former Governors, Seven Women, and 17 Other Nominees
Former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, along with three other ex-governors, found their names included in President Bola Tinubu's ministerial list that was presented before the Senate on a Thursday afternoon.
The three other former governors on the list were Dave Umahi from Ebonyi State, Nasir El Rufai from Kaduna State, and Abubakar Badaru from Jigawa State.
In addition to the ex-governors, the list featured other prominent individuals such as Dele Alake, who served as the Presidential spokesman; Abubakar Kyari, the acting National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC); and Lateef Fagbemi, a respected Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
The long-awaited ministerial list was finally presented to the Senate by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila. He formally handed over the list to Senate President Godswill Akpabio at precisely 01:19 pm.
Akpabio revealed that the list was dated July 27, 2023, and titled "Request for Confirmation of Ministerial Nominees." He further mentioned that more nominations would be forwarded to the Senate in due course. Subsequently, Akpabio proceeded to read out the names of the 28 nominees on the list.
Tinubu's selections were diverse and drew attention from various political figures, including former governors, current and former members of the Senate and House of Representatives.
Among the nominees, 25% were women, showcasing a step towards gender representation in the cabinet, while the majority, 75%, were men. Notable women among the nominees included Betta Edu, Doris Aniche Uzoka, Hannatu Musawa, Nkiru Onyeojiocha, Stella Okotete, Nkiru Onyeojiocha, Uju Kennedy Ohaneye, and Iman Suleiman Ibrahim.
Analysts have often linked the delayed take-off of previous administrations to late announcements of ministers. However, Tinubu took a different approach and submitted his ministerial list to the National Assembly one day before his 60-day constitutional deadline of July 28, 2023.
According to the Fifth Amendment to the 1999 Constitution, the President is required to submit the names of ministerial nominees to the National Assembly within 60 days of assuming office.
